Expertise for Animals supports Animal Society in their commitment against chick killing in the European Union.

Report on chick killing in the EU

An event on chick killing is taking place in the European Parliament today. It is still common practice in Europe to kill chicken and duck chicks immediately after hatching.

The organization Animal Society is taking part in the event in Brussels. They submitted a detailed report on the issue to the European Commission in December. Expertise for Animals supported them by checking relevant facts and data as well as researching animal-related issues.

The way out of chick-killing

The report gives an overview of the current situation in Germany and Europe and possible alternatives to stop the practice. Another aim of the report is to provide an assessment of developments in Germany since the national chick-killing ban.

In January 2022, Germany became one of the first countries in the world to ban the systematic killing of chicks in hatcheries. In this country, the actors involved are already gaining practical experience with the phase-out.

In the report, Animal Society brings together all relevant information for the debate at EU level. It critically examines current developments with the aim of promoting the phasing out of the animal exploitation industry.

Background

The European Commission is currently reviewing animal welfare legislation to bring animal welfare in the EU in line with current scientific knowledge. To this end, the Commission is carrying out an impact assessment on a possible ban on chick-killing at EU level.
